Press releasesThe 4th Copenhagen Sakura Festival Saturday 7 May and Sunday 8 May 10.00-17.00News about the 4th Copenhagen Sakura Festival!Around 14:46 of March 11, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 9 on The Richter scale struck the Sanriku Coast, Japan. Tsunami waves of more than 7 meters swept over cities and villages in the Tohoku District off the Pacific Ocean, causing devastating human as well as physical damage. Tokyo also observed tremors with a seismic intensity of over 5, but the damage there was relatively modest. Aftershocks still persist, particularly in the Tohoku district. After the earthquake, a nuclear emergency situation was declared at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station. After the devastation of the earthquake and following tsunami, great consideration has been given as to whether to hold the 4th Copenhagen Sakura Festival or not. The Copenhagen Sakura Festival Committee has decided that as the festival takes place in Copenhagen and is a festival for the Danish people, Japanese residents in Denmark and anyone who wishes to participate, the festival should still take place. However, in view of the disaster in Japan and the devastating consequenses for ordinary people in the affected regions, it is the wish of the committee that the festival should also remember the many people in Japan who are still suffering. Therefore, donation boxes will be placed at the information booth next to the stage and information about how to donate money to the victims will be available. The Sakura Festival will still be a celebration of the beautiful cherry blossoms in accordance with the Japanese spirit with Japanese food and culture, but anyone wishing to show their sympathy with the victims or make a donation will be very welcome. We hope the weather will be warm and sunny and we will see as many people as possible at this year's festival.
